A beautiful, soft, 100% upcycled cotton sari, handmade, kantha quilt.
Our kantha throws are so much more than just a throw. Handcrafted by very special women at Basha, a fair trade social enterprise in Bangladesh that helps survivors of sex trafficking and women at risk rebuild their lives. Through the creation of these beautiful and unique items, the artisans are now employed in work that brings dignity, livelihood and a brighter future.
• Our kantha quilts are six layers of vintage sari, hand-sewn together by women in Bangladesh using a traditional kantha stitch. • The word 'kantha' means 'patched cloth' and skilful repairs simply enhance the vintage character of this quilt. • Handsewn in approximately 46 hours (5-6 days), depending on experience. • Made of 100% upcycled cotton sari cloth. The cloth used in our kanthas is re-purposed, which means no new dyes or inks, no by-products of production; the only factory-produced supplies we use are thread. • Time softened sari cotton creates a lightly-quilted, cosy feel. • Our large throws are approximately double sized: 2 m x 2 m (6'8" x 6'8"). • Weight: 1.7 kg • This quilt is double-sided and features two different patterns. • Our kantha quilts are machine washable (and in fact get softer over more time & use). • Each kantha is one-of-a-kind with it’s own unique variations and each one features the hand-stitched name of the woman who made it. This quilt was handmade by Putul. • Handmade by women who were previously trafficked into or otherwise engaged in formal or floating sex work (or at risk), now employed in work that brings dignity & livelihood. • All our kantha is fair trade. At Kantha Karma We work only with fair trade organizations that put artisans first. • These are beautiful heirloom pieces which provide freedom and opportunity to the women who hand crafted your kantha quilt.
